In Kozhikode, amidst surveillance in Malappuram district following a Nipah infection-related death, a man from Othayi in Edavanna panchayat has been hospitalized at Manjeri Govt Medical College Hospital for suspected symptoms of Mpox, a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus. The 38-year-old man, who recently returned from Dubai, sought treatment at the dermatology OP for fever and skin rashes on Monday. Upon observing his symptoms and travel history, doctors admitted him for observation. Samples have been sent to the virology lab at Kozhikode Govt Medical College Hospital for testing with results expected by Wednesday evening. Health Minister Veena George mentioned that the man isolated himself upon suspicion and precautions have been taken. Malappuram DMO Dr. R Renuka advised vigilance among close family members. The WHO declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern due to the emergence of a new virus strain, but there have been no confirmed cases in India yet.The ongoing global health crisis highlighted by WHO concerns a specific strain of monkeypox known as Clade 1 of Mpox. This viral infection is caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. There are two main genetic variants of the virus known as clade I (with subclades 1a and 1b) and clade 2 (with subclades 2a and 2b). Mpox can spread through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or animals carrying the virus. Symptoms of Mpox typically include rashes, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
